Fatwa Against Working Of Women

Just yesterday my husband told me about the latest fatwa issued by Darul Uloom Deoband against working of Muslim women. I flipped through the newspaper sheets to find out the matter in detail. But all I could gather was that the outfit opposed the working of women as it promoted the type of culture that does not adhere to the Islamic rules. Girls working in private and public sectors are required to converse and intermingle with their male counterparts which is against Islam.

Though I am not an Islamic scholar, but I definitely believe that Islam is not all about restricting women and curtailing their legitimate rights. Well-educated and qualified women are strength of developed and progressive society. Be it any profession, their contribution must be appreciated and encouraged. In fact there is dire need for Muslims with highly restrictive thoughts to understand the importance of women participation in different work fields.

Today women have successfully conquered male-dominated bastions. In their own little way they are making positive difference to the existing social set up. Why can’t women become a part of professions that contribute towards the betterment of society and people? A teacher, a doctor or any other professional are an important part of any progressive society. What’s wrong if women too wish to join these lines? Imparting education or treating the ill cannot be gender based. These services are most respectable and hence even women should to be allowed to become their part .

As far as the main objection of the Darul Uloom is concerned about 'man meeting women' is far beyond comprehension. Being a Muslim girl, I believe that girl can maintain dignity and decorum in any working condition. What is most important is your “Niyat” (intentions). If your intentions are honest and pure then how can anyone ever think wrong about you? And if even after your good conduct someone holds wrong opinion or thinks bad about you then it is his problem or fault.

Finally I would like to conclude that women’s working is not bad, it’s the mentality of narrow-minded people in the surroundings that make things murkier. One must accept the fact that women too are humans and have full right to education and pursue career that is not haram. Any prudent Muslim girl would understand her limits and work within the desirable confines. Don’t dictate her, let her make her own decisions, just as men do.
