Selfie - A Moment to Cherish!

The very concept of 'Selfie' never excited me. In fact, when I saw others taking Selfies at every instance and occasion I found them to be really stupid, thinking they are just too much self-engrossed. I wondered what actually excited them so much about taking pics at the drop of a hat. Taking Selfies with friends and relatives at parties, picnics, gatherings was still pardonable, but taking Selfies at not-so-special moments and then sharing it with everyone was something I never understood.

I always believed that clicking pics frequently was a futile act and unwanted for. Then, one day I read a book by one the famous philosophers and great communication leaders. According to him it is good to capture moments as it gives you memory to cherish forever. His views on photography actually changed my opinion and then there was this particular incident that further changed my notion in favor of capturing moments in lenses.

Memorable Selfie with my Niece

This particular Selfie is really special to me. It changed the way I looked at 'clicking pics'. It was a hard day for us. After a long time my sister and I had reunited at Pune. We had made many plans for the coming days. A trip to nearby hill stations was prime on our list. Just a day to go and we had to leave for our vacation trip.

We decided to do some shopping prior to our trip. I along with my sister, my high-spirited niece and mother set out to explore shopping stores early in the day. We were highly excited. Tried different stores and shops, leaving no shops feeling unwanted. All was going well. After a long day shopping we went to a restaurant to satiate our hunger. The food was tasty and we devoured the meal in no time.

With hands full of shopping bags, tummy full with gourmet meal, we now felt little tired but my 9-year old niece was still charged and wanted some more fun. Saying 'No' to the super excited soul was difficult for me, thankfully my mother inter wined and said that we must wind up and return home. It was also getting late and next day we had to set out for our planned trip.

So, finally we took an auto rickshaw for our home. My niece loved auto rickshaw rides. I wondered what was so amazing about this ride, with all the pollution, bumpy roads and noisy surroundings engulfing you. Anyways, after an hours struggle we finally reached home.

As soon as we entered our home each one of us tossed ourselves onto the couches to relax our much tired body. Although physically tired our minds were still super active. Hence, after a cup of tea we decided to relish our shopping.

Just as we were feeling highly elated with our shopping results, we realized that two shopping bags were missing. One of them had my new watch and few apparels and the other one had some accessories. We searched for the bags but failed to find them. After racking our brains for a while we realized that the two bags were either left in the auto or by mistake dropped somewhere. Since we had too many bags it was quiet possible that we did not notice it.

Our high spirits were overshadowed with disappointment. Every shopped item was selected and purchased after lot of scrutiny and had given a feeling of one of its kind. But now we were not in possession of the much loved items. The feeling that I did not even got a chance to try it once saddened me. Further, the loss of money escalated my guilt. We tried to analyse different options in order to trace the missing items but we knew that those were not productive options. So, finally I accepted that we have lost them and cannot recover!

We had to leave early morning, the next day. With a heavy heart we did our packing. Desperately missing the items that were specially purchased for the trip. After dinner we sat for our usual chit chats. My niece was cool. She was checking out some of the new earings that were still with us.

Her vibrancy and cheerfulness filled the room with positive vibes, casting away the negativity that surrounded us. I decided to forget about the lost things and enjoy the moment. So, I called her to me with all the earnings. We tried each one of them one by one. In order to further cheer up our saddened souls my niece came up with the idea of Selfie. I instantly agreed with her and then began our Selfie sessions. The above pic is one of the Selfies taken that night.

Its been a year since that incident. This particular Selfie brings a smile to me every time I look at it. It reminds me the that no matter what, disappointments should not be allowed to ruin special moments. Each day is made up of experiences, some good and some not-so-good, we must try to live each moment joyfully.

Now, I have also started enjoying taking Selfies as it gives me the opportunity to preserve special moments for future.  It allows me to relish and relive moments.

  1. Photographs are a documentation of your life. :) The photograph might not mean anything to an external person. But when you see the photograph (featuring you or one you have taken), it immediately transports to you to that moment and you can relive it to a certain extent.
