As you step
outside your house in the morning for office, college or school, what would you
like to welcome you, a gust of fresh air caressing you or some foul smell
rising from the heap of garbage nearby? Well, a fresh and clean environment for
sure can be the right kick off for the day.
In India I have
witnessed locations with good and clean surroundings as well as areas with dirty
and unhygienic situations. I must say that surroundings and environment impacts
you a lot.
A healthy life requires good and clean surroundings. Any place that lacks proper sanitation and hygienic
conditions is not only frustrating but also serves as a breeding ground for several diseases. There are
many cities and towns that face complete absence of proper sanitation provisions and
disposable management mechanisms. As a result of which people unhesitantly use
their neighbouring areas for dumping their home waste.
Any free
space which is not in use becomes the dumping ground. Since there are no proper
garbage collection methods people dump their home garbage where ever they find
space.
I have seen some areas turning into mountains of garbage, creating unhygienic
environment which worsens in rains. And the strangest part is that while people
clean their houses regularly they don’t mind living in dirty surroundings.
People
spitting on walls of public and private buildings, peeing anywhere they feel
the urge and throwing disposables just anywhere at their convenience. All this
leads to creation of unhygienic environment where you can stay but not live a healthy life.
Well, there
are lot of factors contributing to this pathetic situation in India. The two
major ones include …laxity on the part of the government and municipal
corporation and second is the indifferent attitude of people.
The
municipal corporations are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the
areas that come under their jurisdiction. These officials handed with an
important task fail badly in their job. If only they understand the importance
of their role and become responsible changes can be brought. The government of
the respective states and districts must open their eyes and be sensitive
towards the cleanliness drive.
The
responsible heads need to tighten up. They must take necessary steps towards
improving the situation of their districts. There are so many ways which if implemented
properly can improve the worsening conditions like:
- · Installation of proper garbage bins
at very few miles
- · Promoting garbage disposable units
- · Better sewage systems
- · Appointment of right people for
cleaning of streets regularly
- · Establishing proper committees for
maintenance and cleanliness of parks and open spaces used by public.
- · There are several other nations that
maintain a very clean and hygienic environment. We can study their working
models and implement some that are relevant to our conditions.
If the
respective authorities become vigilant and serious towards attaining the goal
of Swachh Bharat then difference can
be made.
Apart from
the respective authorities and designated committees, it is also the
responsibility of every individual to make sure he and people around him are
actively contributing towards maintaining a clean and hygienic environment.
Well
organised programs must be initiated creating awareness among the people about
the importance of hygienic environment. A very well-planned and effective
movement can be started to sensitize people about Swachh Bharat.
Let everyone
consider himself/herself as the role model for the desired change. The
cleanliness drive can be initiated at schools and colleges. Students and youth can
be roped in to promote the ideals of Swachh
Bharat.
Popular
faces from media and bollywood too can be a part of the cleanliness drive. Some
actors and actresses have already come forward and taken the initiative towards this end.
Every building,
colony and even mohalla must have committees responsible for maintaining
hygienic environment of their area.
Let there be strict rules laid down for achieving the goals of Swachh Bharat. Let there be fines and compensations for offenders
who flout the rules.Lot can be
done and lot can be changed. All we need is the ‘will to bring the change’ and support of the government machinery.
If all responsible
heads, authorities and individuals come together and take a pledge to do their bit I
am sure the much desired goal of Swachh
Bharat can be attained.
